Newsletter – 1 June 2015

Durban is certainly the home of surfski paddling with some of the most amazing conditions in the world during the winter months which participants of the recently concluded Bay Union Surfski Series with attest to. Durban’s autumn series enjoyed 5 consecutive weeks of paddling perfection which has gotten us really excited for what’s to come in KZN this winter!

KwaZulu-Natal’s calendar has enjoyed a significant revamp with just a couple of weeks separating the five Durban-based autumn races and the newly formed FNB Durban Downwind Surfski Series.

But isn’t the Durban Downwind a stand-alone, once-off race you ask?

And yes, you’d be correct. Well, at least in 2014 you would have been however 2015’s shake-up and the awesome backing of FNB – co-title sponsor of last year’s inaugural Durban Downwind – has seen the expansion of the event into a five race series this year that will include fantastic surfski venues such as Scottburgh, Toti, Pirates and Winkle on top of the traditional host venue of the Durban Downwind, Marine Surf Lifesaving Club.

A huge thanks to FNB for making the establishment of the FNB Durban Downwind Surfski Series possible and we look forward to some awesome racing in KZN this winter because of it.

One of the first things you will notice about the calendar of the newly launched series is that there are two proposed dates for each of the series’ five events. No, this is not a typo, it is in fact to to create a window period each of the race with the race to take place on either the Saturday or the Sunday, depending on which day is likely to offer the best downwind conditions.

There are a number of other great innovations that the series will look to roll out:
•    Enter the first four races at the season opener in Scottburgh and you will receive FREE entry to race 5, the FNB Durban Downwind Surfski Race!
•    Race 5 will also double as a World Surfski Series title race so expect to be on the start line with some of the best in the world this winter!
•    We also have some great new sponsors entering the sport for the first time this winter with Halfway Toyota, Zurich, Seabreeze Build it and ET Security getting involved as races sponsors of the 2015 FNB Durban Downwind Surfski Series and we thank them for their very generous support!
